The Business Excellence Awards were created to celebrate Borders companies who are demonstrating excellence in their field. Businesses were invited to showcase success in areas such as growth, employee development, international trade and innovation.
A special award was open to businesses and organisations who maximised the opportunities available through Homecoming Scotland 2009. This award was to recognise the economic impact that can be made when the community, voluntary, public sector and private sector work together.
The event was a great success and a testament to the work that goes on here in the Scottish Borders despite the downturn in the economy.
I attended on behalf of the Social Enterprise Chamber and celebrated with everyone else the successes on the day. At previous New Ways Awards I remember writing that our sector had done really well competing on a level playing field and we came away with several success stories from the "Third Sector". However this year I have to report that only one of our members Bookdonors were shortlisted in the Employer of the Year category and received a plaque.
We will have to work harder next year to ensure that the criteria is set so that all sectors can again apply whilst recognising the work we need to do to ensure that the "Third Sector" which plays such a part in the delivery of services in the Borders works even harder in promoting what it does and next year who knows we might have a category for best "Social Enterprise".
