Scottish Borders Social Enterprise Chamber is a membership organisation for social enterprises in the Scottish Borders. It is funded by the Scottish Government through the Scottish Borders Third Sector Partnership to help meet their national outcome 'that social enterprise develops and grows'.
The Chamber supports the development of social enterprise in three main ways:
1. Acting as a voice for social enterprise: promoting the concept of social enterprise and the use of public social partnerships; representing the views of Scottish Borders' social enterprises at a national level; working to resolve issues common to social enterprises in the Borders; sharing news from social enterprise members;
2. Providing individual support: providing one to one business support to social enterprises and aspiring social entrepreneurs (e.g. business planning, feasibility studies, legal structures, sources of finance, marketing); signposting members to organisations for specialist business support;
3. Providing general support: providing monthly networking meetings to provide general advice and updates on current affairs to those managing social enterprises in the Borders and allowing them to discuss their successes and seek peer support; providing regular training sessions on common issues including procurement, social return on investment and employment law.
The Social Enterprise Chamber’s Outreach Programme delivers structured and focused consultancy and development work to existing and emerging social enterprises working with a pool of consultants, all of whom have strategic and operational knowledge at senior management level of both social enterprise and private business.
Drawing on specialist knowledge and viewing situations from the external viewpoint each of our consultants can assess, report on and develop any area of your organisation no matter how small.
Where can we help:
- Sales & Marketing
- Finance & Funding
- Human Resources
- Research & Development
- Customer Services
Our consultants give you enhanced control by freeing up time that you can spend focusing on your core strengths and developing a future for the organisation, safe in the knowledge that you are doing the right thing on Facebook and Twitter, or that the awkward job of recruitment is being handled effectively. Our consultants are also happy to develop presentations or arrange training for your staff to ensure you don’t need us forever!
Our development workers are available to work on your project for a specified period of time or on a rolling basis, we offer this flexibility to ensure the needs of the enterprise are being met.
Often new social enterprises budget for a development worker post for the duration of the core funding, which can be between 1 and 3 years however we have found that the role of this worker is very different at the start of the project than it is once the project has been set up so this service enables you to draw on a specialism for a temporary period of time.
